How We Do It

We Purchase

We buy essential household supplies — cleaning products, laundry items, paper goods, food products, and more — in bulk, then store them for later distribution, both directly to veterans and to local community partner agencies.

We Partner

We work with the VA's Community Resources and Referral Center, Humility Shelter and Services, and the Elks Lodge of Davenport to identify and respond to veterans who have faced or are facing homelessness or other forms of housing crisis.

We Deliver

After receiving a request for supplies from one of our partner agencies, we assemble the request at our storage facility in Moline, then make the delivery either to the agency itself or directly to the veteran(s). Either way, requested supplies arrive at their destinations within a few days, and always at no cost either to the veteran(s) or the agencies that serve them.

We purchase essential household supplies and food items in order to then pack them into buckets, laundry baskets, and grocery sacks. All of which, including cases of individual items, we eventually load into our vehicles for delivery directly to veterans or to area agencies that serve them.

Our Story

Helmets of Hope History

Helmets of Hope started in 2015 as a ministry of First Christian Church of East Moline, making its first supply deliveries in December 2015. In the two previous years, the church had collected personal hygiene products for the homeless veteran community in the Quad Cities, but then learned from the VA that essential household supplies were a more pressing need.

First Christian Church of East Moline ended its visible ministry at the end of 2024. In advance of that outcome, in July 2024, we established Helmets of Hope as the standalone 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, incorporated in Illinois, that it is today.

As of May 2026, we have provided more than 42,000 items to more than 1,000 veterans in the two-state area. We're excited about the future and welcome your support as we serve those who have served us.
